Phil Foden: a talent who has grown into a superstar this season. Why?
Pep Guardiola has revamped the offensive midfielder in a similar way to Messi at Barcelona
He's been in the Manchester City A team since he was 17 and his importance has continued to grow. This season, however, Phil Foden has literally had a performance eruption and has established himself as one of the key players in Guardiola's all-star orchestra. What has made the youngster with the number 47 on his back so indispensable? You might be surprised for a real reason, because at first glance a lot of people don't spot it.
No one has doubted his extraordinary talent since he was a child. Although Phil Foden never stood out with his big physique and muscles, he dominated on the field, even when playing with older guys. He was always able to overcome the greater physical strength of his opponents with football intelligence, technique and spatial awareness. He got the basics of this alphabet in football battles with his mates in the car park or small pitches in the suburbs of Manchester where he grew up.
He then began to develop his football skills and abilities under the expert supervision of coaches at Manchester City's academy.
The turning point came in 2017. That's when coaching visionary Pep Guardiola arrived in the pale blue kingdom from Bayern Munich. For Foden, it was a huge stroke of luck. It didn't escape the Catalan coach that there was a kid running around the academy whose short dribbling, finesse, reading of the game was reminiscent of Spanish players. Even though he was born in England. And so Foden moved permanently into the A's cabinet.
Imagine: you're 17 and suddenly you walk into a dressing room where Kompany, Walker or David Silva are sitting!
But young Phil's knees didn't buckle. On the contrary, he was gradually getting his feet wet and his performances were asking for more and more minutes on the pitch. Today he is one of the main pillars of a team with an incredible collection of trophies. Most players don't reach a similar collection in their entire career, he has it at just 23 years old!
To give you an idea, here's a list of Foden's titles:
5 Premier League titles
2 FA Cup titles
4 League Cup titles
1 Champions League title
1 European Super Cup title
1 Club World Cup title.
Add to that one U17 World Cup title.
And soon another league title or European Championship title may add to the fabulous collection, as England will be among the biggest favourites for EURO 2024.
WOW!!!
